How do I deal with a 28-year-old drug addict who is an accountant? After University he got a good job, left a few months later because of drugs. He is in a rehabilitation centre but not getting better.

Addiction of any kind takes over the life of the individual. This understanding will help with compassion rather than blame, which is the commonplace in relating to those with addiction. A person’s will and cognition are being taken by substance or habit. The rational thinking is not there. Satan and self are behind every addiction. People know the implication of what they are doing but believe or convince themselves they can handle it. Addiction is an ocean that drowns the victim in a matter of days, if not immediately. It is an ocean because you are not just battling the water, but other things inside it. The Sharks, Whales, rocks, contamination, salt and pollution and so is addiction. The person also battles with loss of cognition and reasoning, loss of job, loved ones, social vices, poverty, stealing and many others. Dealing with drug addiction involves multiple interventions, but the greatest of them are prayers and faith. Rehabilitation centres do help but depending on their package and operations. Some centres have more robust care than the others. If he has access to drugs in the rehab, no psychologist, counsellor to mention but a few, he will look forward to the day he is out, to continue. A key factor to their recovery is the word of God. Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It takes the word to convict them of sin, of righteousness and of judgement. You can only reason with them through the scriptures to bring comfort, hope and strength to say no to Satan. Do send in daily scriptures like Romans 7, James 4:7 As you pray for any other person to be saved, please pray for an addict with more effort Matthew 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Have faith in Christ Jesus, He is able to deliver him.
